About the Archives

The Stephen B. Luce Library at SUNY Maritime College is home to unique collections documenting maritime culture, industry, and education in the state of New York and beyond.

College Archives document the history of Maritime College. As the oldest school of its kind in the country, these collections tell the story of the development of maritime education in the U.S.
Alumni Papers shed light on the personal experiences of graduates who went on to have distinguished careers in the maritime industry. Highlights include the papers of Malcolm Peters Nash (Class of 1887), Louis Weickum (Class of 1903), John S. Baylis (Class of 1903), and Arthur M. Tode (Class of 1912).
Special Collections document the history of significant people and organizations within the maritime industry. Highlights include the records of Sailors’ Snug Harbor, a home in Staten Island for retired, sick and disabled seamen established in 1801, and the records of the Marine Society of the City of New York, a civic and charitable organization established in the late 1700s.
