The library's holdings of print books contain over 80,000 volumes with special strength in marine engineering, maritime history, naval architecture, marine transportation, oceanography, transportation economics, and management. In addition, the library has access to approximately 20,000 electronic books to support the academic program.
New additions to the collection are featured in displays on the first floor of the library. The newest items are listed here.
The library's Circulating Collection is located on the second floor of the Stephen B. Luce Library. The collection is a mix of materials related to the Maritime curriculum, such as navigation, ship construction, international trade, and marine sciences, and general interest titles. These items may be checked out by current students, faculty, and staff of SUNY Maritime College.
The Gove Collection, in memory of Robert Gove '78, is located on the first floor of the library. The emphasis of the collection is on works about adventure at sea and maritime history. These books go to sea every summer during Summer Sea Term as part of the ship's library collection.
The library regularly purchases both individual ebook titles and subscription ebook packages from a variety of vendors including Ebrary, EBSCO, and Springer. These books are available remotely for current students, faculty, and staff.
Periodicals in Print
The Stephen B. Luce Library has an extensive collection of both current and historical journals, magazines, and trade publications. Current periodicals, which also include newspapers and popular magazines, are located by issue. Historical publications are housed both in bound volumes on the first floor of the library and in our special collections.
Feature Film DVD Collection
The library purchases feature films on DVD for personal use by the Maritime community. These DVDs circulate for loan periods of two days. During Summer Sea Term their availability is limited, as most titles are sent as part of the ship's library collection. To borrow DVDs, please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.
Educational DVD Collection
The library's Educational DVD Collection contains both training videos geared towards professional mariners as well as documentaries and educational programming relating to our curricular areas from PBS, the Science Channel, the History Channel, and Discovery. To borrow DVDs, please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.
Campus faculty place course materials for their students in the library's Reserve Collection. Items are kept behind the Circulation Desk, shelved by professor's last name. Search the Reserve Collection Placing Materials on Reserve (for Faculty)
Reference and Controlled Circulation Collections
The library has several regular collections whose items have limited circulation. The Reference Collection is located on the first floor of the library in open stacks and does not circulate. The Ready Reference Collection, another non-circulating collection, contains materials such as the Guide to Port Entry, Ports and Terminals Guide, and exam preparation materials. The Controlled Circulation Collections contain both circulating and non-circulating materials. For items in the Ready Reference and Controlled Circulation Collections, please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.
